Climate Improvement Districts

Category: Days Out

About this event

Climate change is having a negative effect on urban environments the world over, but the effects are exacerbated in some areas more than others, because of poor planning decisions. As well as a talk, audience discussion and walking tour, the event will review the local measures taken forward by LQBID including Bankmore Square rejuvenation and turning a gap site on Great Victoria Street into an ecologial haven with bird habitats.

During this event, Andrew Haley, Director of The Paul Hogarth Company, will highlight some examples of best practice for climate improvement measures in the urban environment, drawing on projects which they have delivered including Connswater Community Greenway and at Kirkham in Lancashire as well as ongoing work in Dublin.

Andrew will suggest measures which Belfast could and should adopt going forward, before audience members are invited on a short walking tour of recent nearby deliverables, such as Bankmore Square and urban ecology projects on Great Victoria Street.

There will also be an opportunity to hear from the Maldron Hotel on their own initiatives, and sample some tea and honey, harvested from the beehives on the roof of the hotel (subject to a good harvest!).

Andrew Haley is a Director with The Paul Hogarth Company, Chair of the Ministerial Advisory Group for Architecture and the Built Environment for Northern Ireland (MAG), Built Environment Expert with the Design Council and High StreetTask Force Expert Advisor. For over 30 years, Andrew has contributed his placemaking skills as a Landscape Architect, Urban Designer and Regeneration Consultant within urban and rural settings across Northern Ireland, the rest of the UK, Ireland, and internationally. Projects have included the Connswater Community Greenway, Wild Atlantic Way, Hillsborough Castle, and the regeneration of Laganside and Titanic Quarter.
