Northern Ireland Beef Sector and the Beef Carbon Reduction Scheme Year 1 Performance Summary

The Beef Carbon Reduction Scheme, introduced in January 2024 as part of DAERA’s Sustainable Agriculture Programme, is supporting efforts to reduce emissions in Northern Ireland’s beef sector. The scheme encourages earlier finishing of cattle by offering payments to farmers who meet age targets at slaughter.

Early participation has been high, with most eligible farms taking part and many animals meeting the initial age requirements. Average slaughter age has fallen slightly compared to previous years, contributing to emissions reductions. The scheme will continue to tighten age targets through to 2027.
