Met Office announces new training on climate risk, data analytics and reporting
The Met Office has announced a new training course designed to support organisations and professionals in understanding and assessing climate-related risks through data.
“Assessing Climate Risk: Introduction to Climate Data and Reporting” will provide a structured introduction to the principles of climate risk assessment and the practical application of climate projections.
This course will equip participants with the knowledge and tools required to interpret climate data and apply it within risk assessment and reporting frameworks. It is suitable for consultants, analysts, and professionals seeking to build confidence in the use of climate data for decision-making and reporting purposes.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Apply established frameworks for assessing climate risk in both voluntary and regulatory reporting contexts
- Identify key climate hazards and evaluate associated organisational impacts, risks, and opportunities
- Access and utilise publicly available climate datasets, including UK Climate Projections 2018 (UKCP18), and apply appropriate analytical methodologies
- Communicate climate data and associated uncertainties effectively to stakeholders
- Understand the limitations of freely available climate data and recognise when further analysis may be required
The course is delivered online via Microsoft Teams and combines live instruction with self-paced learning. It includes a one hour introductory sessions, three interactive workshop sessions, as well as independent e-learning modules completed between workshops. Participants will have regular opportunities to engage with subject matter experts, ask questions, and receive feedback throughout the programme. The training is delivered by Met Office scientists with extensive experience in climate data analysis and application.
Participants should expect to dedicate approximately 20–25 hours in total, including:
- Around 10 hours of live workshop sessions
- An additional 10–15 hours of self-directed e-learning
The training will take places across the following dates:
