The NI Adapts Toolkit

We are already experiencing the impacts of extreme weather events, and this trend is expected to continue. Northern Ireland will experience warmer, wetter winters and hotter, drier summers, therefore; we need to be prepared for a much greater range of extremes. It is important that all organisations understand the risks facing them from climate change and take steps to prepare. This is called ‘climate change adaptation planning’.

Why use this tool?

There are a wide variety of approaches and guidance on an international level which organisations could use to develop a climate adaptation plan. However, Climate NI understands that with a vast amount of information available this can be challenging or confusing, leaving many organisations feeling unsure about what will work best for their context.

To meet this challenge, the NI Adapts Adaptation Planning toolkit, aims to outline a consistent and robust methodology for organisations to develop an Adaptation Plan, taking account of regional context for organisations in Northern Ireland. It also aims to align with internationally agreed best practice, which is continually evolving.

About the Toolkit

Aims of the NI Adapts Toolkit

Climate NI has developed this toolkit to support organisations in Northern Ireland to take the first steps in developing their Climate Adaptation Plans.

The five-step approach enables organisations to respond to requests for information under the Climate Change Act (NI) 2022, and other national or international frameworks, by enabling you to:

  • Understand the climate challenges already facing your organisation,
  • Explore your vulnerability to future changes in the climate,
  • Explore data and policies necessary to better understand and address climate risks, and
  • Monitor and evaluate progress on implementing actions and reducing climate risk.

How do I use the tool?

This toolkit provides you with the guidance, information and resources you will need to complete the five stages of the NI Adapts Planning Cycle. These steps align with the five steps in the Net Zero NI cycle, and by completing Step 4 of both cycles you will have developed a comprehensive climate action plan to both reduce greenhouse emissions and begin to prepare for the impacts of climate change.

These steps are not prescriptive in terms of what a final plan should look like. Please feel free to use the cycles as an outline and use those parts that are most relevant. Develop your plan in the way that makes sense for your organisation.
